Handbound novels mean we get to regulate our process better.
From using non toxic ink, partnering with Epson, to using paper sourced locally from Sappi whose forests create local employment and provide surrounds with fresh air and windbreakers - we collect our supplies on a once off basis to limit our carbon footprint and distribute on a once on limited designated dates. Membership makes our approach to publishing and distribution possible which is why we employ it as necessary for the literary experience the house offers.
OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH BEES
In an effort to avoid unnatural materials in the production of our literature, Zuri Manor House turns to one of nature's smartest - bees. Working with a beekeeper in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal, the house supports the welfare of the bees by purchasing beeswax with which we coat the copies of our handbound collectibles.
Safe for people who have allergies too, the books are left to cure for a month before they are shipped to their new destination during one of our designated delivery slots. Our partners, the bees, live in fair conditions personally monitored by Nona Zuri herself. To further honour all that our fuzzy, winged geniuses share with us, the house is dedicated to promoting efforts towards their conservation.
OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE COMMUNITY
Zuri Manor House values the human story so we take time to hone unique skills that we can pass on from generation to generation. A bare minimum, we ensure that we do not exploit labour. Our team size is a reflection of our value to only hire if it truly empowers.
When it comes to engaging the community, Zuri Manor House is currently running two social empowerment projects. The first: Humanities Decoded, provides guidance for individuals looking to pursue a career in Humanities. The second: Mind & Leisure is a for profit venture that promotes accessible mental healthcare through a tailored lifestyle.
